Oral contraceptives (OCs) provide safe, effective, and reversible contraception and are widely used by women for fertilitycontrol. However, very little is known especially by the users about the effects of OCs on sexual functioning, even though in countries like Nigeria they are arguably the fastest selling pharmaceutical products.
Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a very common disorder. An estimated 4 in 10 women have at least one sexual dysfunction.
Research shows that contraception has changed female sexuality. The possibility of sex without pregnancy is taken for granted by most women and facilitates sexual availability, and this is done without proper consideration of the potential consequences to female sexual response associated with contraceptive methods in use today.
Various research studies have demonstrated that Female Sexual Function was negatively influenced by the use of OCs.
Identified problems associated with OC use include:
· Reduction of sexual satisfaction
· Reduction of the frequency of orgasm during intercourse
