The bleaching, chameleon crowd By Reuben Abati

I wrote a piece recently, a tribute to the late veteran actress Bukky Ajayi and the multi-instrumentalist OJB Jezreel, in which I raised a number of issues, including how in Nollywood today, there is an obsession with the whitening of skin, an anti-Negritude yellowing, what I referred to as “the bleaching, chameleon crowd of Nollywood beauties.” The various reactions to the piece conveniently ignored this subject; two young ladies who felt that I was probing an unpopular theme drew my attention to this. I was reminded that being light-skinned is now the in-thing, indeed the socially acceptable norm, because there is now a universalization of the concept of beauty and self-esteem. The more light-skinned you are, the more acceptable you are in various circumstances, that is. I thought if this was true, then it is a tragedy indeed for the black world. For, once upon a time in the history of the black race, being black was a thing of joy and an instrument of protest.

Reality star and wife of Kanye is a fashion goddess, she alone can pull several stunts with her fashion. The star was spotted heading into a photo studio in Los Angeles yesterday, where she turned heads in a very unique ensemble. For the outing, Mrs. West donned a casual number that included an oversize black T-shirt and cropped black leggings, but it wasn't her athletic style that had us talking--it was the leather corset that she wore zipped up over her top that caught our attention. Aside from the waist-cincher, the mother of two accessorized her all-black outfit with her favorite Celine sunnies and chic ankle-strap sandals. She styled her hair in a perfectly messy topknot to complete her look.

Hilarry Clinton chooses Kaine as Vice Presidency candidate

Hillary Clinton announced, yesterday during her campaign in Florida, that her choice for Vice President running-mate will be Tim Kaine. The presidential candidate for the U.S Democratic Party revealed her choice in a message to supporters late on Friday in a bid to regain prominence after the Republican convention in Cleveland. The week’s political events in the U.S had previously focused on Donald Trump’s antics during the last days of the Republican Convention, including his hesitant pick of Mike Pence as the vice presidential candidate. Mrs. Clinton is, however, now set to take centre-stage as her announcement had been long anticipated. Kaine, along with Tom Vilsack, was one of the two candidates reported to be remaining on Clinton’s shortlist for a running-mate. The announcement of Kaine gaining the coveted position over Vilsack has come as a shock to those that expected Vilsack’s close personal relationship with the Clinton’s to steal him the spot. Yet, factors
