The Edo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Wednesday handed over N500,160 recovered from an accident scene to its owner, Mr Adetosin Sogbona.
The Assistant Corp Commander, Mr Obisike Uchendu, presented the money and other items recovered to Sogbona, in Benin on Wednesday.
Uchendu said that the FRSC was committed to protecting the lives and property of members of the public, especially on the highway.
He said that Sogbona was a victim of a road accident that occurred on June 22 on the Benin Bye-Pass, close to Ikhweniro community at about 3p.m. in the afternoon.
He said that seven male adults, one female adult and a male child, were involved in the auto-crash involving a Toyota Previa car.
“A team of FRSC marshals carried out the rescue mission at the accident scene and the sum of money was found in the victim’s bag.
“Somebody must identify such victims before any recovered money or property is handed over to him or her.
“There is no point in carrying huge sums of money when travelling; money should be deposited in banks or carried electronically,” he said.
Receiving the money and his belongings, Sogbona, a cattle dealer, thanked the FRSC for rescuing him and protecting his money.
He said that he was travelling from Bayelsa to Ondo when the accident occurred on the Benin-Auchi Bye-pass.
Sogbona, who is currently receiving treatment in a hospital in Benin, said he would desist from carrying huge sums of money when travelling.
The leader of the FRSC rescue team, Mrs Patricia Okonji-Onwochei, said “I took an oath when I got the job to protect lives and property on the Nigerian roads and highways.
“I like being truthful and honest and I don’t take other people’s property.’’
