Chelsea are on red alert to make a second bid for Wayne Rooney after it emerged the England striker is still waiting for a new Manchester United contract offer. Jose Mourinho’s Blues made the Scouse ace their prime target last summer, only giving up in the final days before the transfer window closed despite not going beyond their opening £24million bid. The Rooney bid stalled with Chelsea unwilling to make a bigger big before Rooney put in an official transfer request, while the England striker needed a public signal from the Blues to allow him to make his move. Bridge hierarchy are now ready to go back in for Rooney next summer after discovering champions United have made NO attempt to tie him down to a new deal. Rooney’s current contract has only 18 months to run, but it is understood there have been no talks about a new offer and that none have been planned or scheduled. That comes despite Rooney’s superb form for David Moyes’ troubled Reds, top-scoring with 10 goals from 19 appearances.
Unless United make their move soon, Rooney will be left with a decision to make over whether the club is as committed to him as he has shown himself to be to them this season.
It means Old Trafford chiefs risk Rooney going into the summer with just 12 months left on his contract - the same position as Arsenal were in when Robin Van Persie forced his cut-price move from the Emirates to United in summer 2012.
Mourinho appears resigned to sticking with Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba for the rest of this season, despite his private frustrations over the quality of attacking options at his disposal.
Chelsea now feel that they would simply not get the players they might want - such as Rooney or Monaco’s Radamel Falcao - for the right market price in the winter window.
