I join you all in giving thanks to God Almighty for guiding us and our beloved nation safely through all the challenges of the outgoing year to the beginning of 2014. Exactly 100 years ago today, on January 1, 1914, the British Colonial authorities amalgamated what was then the separate Protectorates of Southern Nigeria and Northern Nigeria, giving birth to the single geopolitical entity known as Nigeria. For us therefore, today is not just the beginning of a new year, but the end of a century of national existence and the beginning of another. 27-man gang on Friday abducted a pastor, Mr. Godson Akubiro, and six of his children from their Adeosun Street residence, Koya Estate, Igbo Olomu, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Akubiro is said to be the founder of Mountain of Breakthrough Church in the area. The incident was said to have occurred about 1.30am. Neighbours, who requested anonymity, it was gathered that the gunmen arrived at Akubiro residence in three jeeps and a Toyota Tundra vehicle. The number plates of the vehicles were said to have been covered. The gunmen, who wore army camouflage, had allegedly gained entrance into the house with the aid of an iron cutter. It was learnt that since the abduction, no one had heard from Akubiro and his six children. The Community Developmen Association Chairman, Mr. Yinka Obasan, said he was alerted about the development about 2am.

An outrage has trailed the sermon of the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, in which he described the celebration of Christmas as “idolatrous.” The cleric had during the annual December convention of the church which ended on Sunday warned his members against partaking in celebrating Christmas. But a cross-section of Nigerians have disagreed with Kumuyi saying observing Christmas was erroneously being tagged a sin. Those who dropped comments online argued that it was wrong for the pastor to tag the day set aside worldwide for the observance of the birth of Jesus Christ as idolatrous. Nigerian forces have stepped up an offensive in the volatile northeast in the past few days, after Boko Haram fighters armed with grenade launchers and anti-aircraft guns attacked an army barracks in the town of Bama on Friday. The military often reports significant casualties among insurgents, while rarely admitting losses among its own troops or civilians. The figures it gave for Monday's battle near the Cameroon border could not immediately be verified. Defence spokesman Brigadier General Chris Olukolade said the military had targeted insurgents behind the Bama attack and that 20 vehicles used in that raid had been spotted from the air and destroyed. A man who had recently separated from his wife threw his three-year-old son from the roof of a high-rise, before jumping to his death moments later. Dmitry Kanarikov, 35, was killed instantly while the boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition but died shortly afterwards.
