As you may recall, indie-pop duo Sleigh Bells caused a stir last year when they accused Lovato of sampling their songs “Riot Rhythm” and “Infinity Guitars” on her Confident bonus track “Stars” without proper credit. Lovato’s producers Carl Falk and Rami Yacoub quickly denied the allegations, telling Rolling Stone, “We did not use any samples in Demi Lovato’s song,” and adding, “Demi was also not involved with the production.”
Now, almost a year later, Sleigh Bells’s Alexis Krauss and Derek Miller have made good on their threat, and have officially launched legal proceedings against Lovato, Falk, Yacoub, and Universal Music Group. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo filed a complaint in a California federal court on Monday, alleging that “Stars” contains material from “Infinity Guitars.”
Their lawsuit reads, in part, “A comparison of the two songs reveals that, at the very least, the combination of the hand claps and bass drum, structured as 3 quarter beats and a rest, with the bass drum providing a counter-rhythm to the hand claps, is at least substantially similar in both works.” The complaint further claims that specific similarities “transcend the realm of coincidence.”
Lovato and her team have yet to comment on the lawsuit.
