The Nigerian music industry is still reeling from the sad news of OJB Jazreel’s death in the early hours of Tuesday, 14th of June, 2016. Born Babatunde Okungbowa, the veteran Nigerian musician & music producer initially suffered kidney failure in 2013 and urgently needed a transplant. His first wife, Mabel Babatunde Okungbowa was the one who saved the day by donating one of her kidneys to save her husband’s life. Speaking up about the tragic and untimely demise of her husband in an interview with The NET yesterday, Mabel who is fondly called ‘Mama J‘ revealed that his death was so sudden and opened up about how she had been by his side all through before he passed away.
She said;
“IT WASN’T REALLY DRAMATIC, IT WAS JUST THE NORMAL SIGNS WE SEE WHEN HE’S ABOUT GOING FOR HIS DIALYSIS BUT THIS TIME HE WAS IN A LOT OF PAINS AND I WAS BY HIS SIDE ALL THROUGH. HIS DEATH IS ALL SO SUDDEN BECAUSE WE WERE STILL SPEAKING ABOUT PLANS FOR HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY OVER THE WEEKEND”
Mabel also stated during the interview that she is glad she made the decision to donate her kidney to her late husband three years ago.
“I DON’T REGRET IT, I DID IT BECAUSE I WANTED TO. I WASN’T FORCED TO DO IT. I DON’T REGRET IT, AFTER ALL, HE’S MY HUSBAND, SO I DON’T REGRET IT”
Sadly OJB passed on yesterday at the age of 49 after his kidney failed about two weeks ago, he will be remembered for being the mastermind behind a number of hit songs including 2Baba Idibia’s“African Queen”. He is survived by three wives, June, Korede, Mabel and eight children
May his soul rest in peace
