Two British men have reportedly drowned while on holiday in Malta.
One of the victims is believed to be a 35-year-old dentist from Small Heath in Birmingham, reports the Birmingham Mail
A second man aged 35 also died in the tragedy, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed.
A third man survived after being rescued by passers-by.
Maltese media said police sources confirmed a friend who was with them, also British, is being held for observation at the Gozo General Hospital suffering from shock.
The Birmingham man's family were notified of his death at 7pm on Saturday.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman, said: "We can confirm the death of two British nationals in Malta."
Malta's police force said the two men were both British nationals.
They were swimming at the Blue Lagoon, in Comino, at about 15:30 when they got into difficulties.
"Members from the Armed Forces of Malta went... to assist the two persons," the force said.
"One person was taken by a private boat to Imgarr whilst the other person was airlifted to the Gozo General Hospital by a helicopter.
"Unfortunate they were both certified dead.
"Another 35-year-old man, who was with them, was taken to hospital for treatment after he had also found himself in difficulty."
A witness reportedly heard the victims shouting for help and saw a man try to rescue them. They also said there were no lifeguards in the area.
Police investigations are under way.
