  A policeman, who allegedly shot and killed a nine-year-old boy while dispersing a mob, appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, , yesterday, on a charge of manslaughter. Thirty-nine-year-old Rasak Alowonle is facing a count charge. According to the prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigie, the mob attempted to stop the accused from seizing a commercial bus. Odigie told the court that the policeman committed the offence on June 13 at Mile 12, Ketu, Lagos. The prosecutor said the accused and other members of his patrol team wanted to seize the bus from a driver who was obstructing traffic. “The accused and his team tried to seize the commercial bus but the driver resisted,” he said. Odigie submitted that the commotion drew the attention of a crowd that attacked the team with stones and broken bottles.

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has rejected a controversial media bill passed by parliament that would have imposed regulation on journalists. Last month, MPs voted to set up a tribunal with the power to impose fines on media houses and journalists for breaching a code of conduct. It provoked a furious reaction from Kenya's independent media. The president's office said it was the first time Mr Kenyatta had used his veto since he took office in April.   A 22-year-old man, Eji Emmanuel, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for the alleged murder of a 39-year-old trader, Sylvanus Okoye. According to the police, the suspect stabbed the deceased to death at his home on Ezemegbu Drive, Okota in August. The suspect, however, explained that he killed the deceased in self-defence. He alleged that on the day of the incident, Okoye had attempted to rape him. Explaining the events that culminated in Okoye’s death, the suspect said he was a dancer and was lured to Lagos by a friend, Chukwudi, under the guise of doing music business only for the friend to introduce him to homosexuality. He said he had gone to report the matter to his friend’s boss but his friend’s boss raped him twice and he reported the matter at the FESTAC Police Division. He said the matter was transferred to the Zone 2 Police Command and the case was turned against him after which he spent two weeks in detention.

The Federal Government has released the details of new duties and levies payable on imported new and used vehicles as well as imported new tyres from next year, raising the tariff from 20 per cent to 70 per cent. Dealers of imported vehicles estimated that the new rate would translate into an increase of 60 per cent on imported cars. The Federal Executive Council had last month approved a new national automotive policy aimed at encouraging local production and assembling of new vehicles with an imposition of a high import tariff on fully built vehicles. But the new rate was not given then.

The Chinese boy whose eyes were gouged out in an attack in August is recovering from surgery which completes the process of implanting prosthetic eyes. Guo Bin has undergone a series of operations for him to have prosthetic eyes to give him a natural appearance. These will not restore his vision. His mother, Wang Wenli, told the BBC they "had to try everything". He was found with his eyes missing, covered in blood in Shanxi last August. Police suspected his late aunt was responsible for gouging his eyes out. Six days after the incident, she reportedly killed herself by jumping into a well. Her motive for the attack remains unclear.
