RECUPERATING Governor Danbaba Suntai may have sent a letter to the Taraba State House of Assembly  seeking to resume  work. The letter, according to a United States- based Nigerian online news portal, SaharaReporters,  was  on Monday  received by the Speaker of the House of Assembly,Haruna Tsokwa.  The portal did not say exactly when the letter was written and the day the governor, who arrived in the country from the US after a 10-month medical sojourn, hoped to commence duties.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA has unveiled plans to construct 20 Transfer Loading Stations, TLS to serve 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas across the state. The acting managing director of the authority, Mrs Abimbola Jijho-Ogun disclosed this at the second “Waste to Food” initiative programme held at Agege Stadium, Lagos last weekend. ‘Waste to Food’ is an annual event targeted at children during the holiday period that seeks to inculcate the waste sorting and recycling culture them (children) at the early stages of life”. Mrs. Jijho-Ogun explained that the programme is to integrate children and corporate organizations into recycling initiative.

  President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday sacked the Minister of Youth Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir from his cabinet. A statement from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, did not give reasons for the sudden termination of Abdulkadir’s appointment. The statement relieving the minister of his appointment, was signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the SGF, Mr. Sam Nwaobasi, which directed him to hand over to the Permanent Secretary in his office with immediate effect.

A man arrested over the suspicious deaths of three of his girlfriends in the same Northern Ireland town has appeared in court charged with murdering two of them. Leslie Ross, of Dromore, County Down, where the women all died, is accused of murdering 47-year-old Michelle Bickerstaff in April last year and 50-year-old Margaret Weiss in August 2007. A file on the third death, that of 52-year-old Lily McKee, who died in December 2002, has been referred to the Public Prosecution Service. Ross spoke only to confirm his name and showed no emotion as the charges were put to him at Armagh Magistrates' Court.

A policeman who killed a commercial motorcyclist (okada rider) in Ikorodu on Tuesday has been arrested and detained, accordi ng to sources The policeman, identified as Haruna, who was on a routine patrol with the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, anti-crime team, was said to have shot and killed  a motorcyclist simply identified as Lekan a.k.a. Oosa, when he allegedly resisted seizure of his motorcycle. The victim was a student of Federal University of Technology, Akure, in Ondo State. Chairman, Motorcyclists Association Of Lagos State, MOALS, Kayode Jimoh, this morning during  a protest organised by the motorcycle riders, said that the motorcyclists were not going to look the other way while policemen keep killing people unjustly. FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - Bradley Manning, the U.S. soldier convicted of the biggest breach of classified data in the nation's history by providing files to WikiLeaks, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on Wednesday. Judge Colonel Denise Lind, who last month found Manning guilty of 20 charges including espionage and theft, could have sentenced him to as many as 90 years in prison. Prosecutors had asked for 60 years. Manning, 25, will be dishonorably discharged from the U.S. military and forfeit some pay, Lind said. His rank will be reduced to private from private first class. Manning would be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his sentence, which will be reduced by the time he has already served in prison plus 112 days. Wearing his dress uniform, the slightly built Manning stood at attention as the sentence was read, seeming to show no emotion. As he was escorted out of the courtroom, supporters shouted "Bradley, we are with you."

  A Plantation woman is facing a charge of first-degree murder after stabbing her husband to death during an argument, Plantation Police said. Tyra Lashay Holmes, 26, stabbed and killed her husband, Michael Holmes, 35, Wednesday night during an argument that was possibly about infidelity, police said. According to a Plantation Police report, the motive was text messages her husband received from a woman. “We just saw him Sunday and he was trying to leave her, but all because of text message in the phone . Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) today arrested a 46-year-old bricklayer from Anambra, who attempted to smuggle 2.07kg of cocaine into the country. A statement by the Spokesman of the NDLEA, Mr Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the suspect was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, with 83 wraps of substance that had tested positive to cocaine. “He was detected with the help of scanning machines during the screening of passengers on an Asky Airline flight from Brazil.’’ Ofoyeju said the suspect was recruited by a drug cartel in Brazil and when arrested excreted one of the highest quantity of cocaine ingested at a time so far this year. “Preliminary investigations revealed that drug barons now have agents who move from village to village in search of drug mules. “They have several antics, which include promise of better job opportunities abroad.
